The Beauty of Analog Photography in Digital!

For the last few weeks I was totally hooked by Hipstamatic iPhone App and its Films and Lens combinations. It is a kind of a unique experience trying those combinations of various films and lenses and sense the value of film look and its vintage expression.

In addition to that, you can’t see the effect of the lens and film while you are taking the picture so it is exciting to focus on composition and connecting with the picture and lighting then see the outcome after it is processed, so it is simulating the film experience which the way people used to do it in film days in the darkroom to see the results and do manual dodging and burning with chemicals!

Below is few pictures I took for my daughter using my iPhone only with Hipstamatic app using the Tinto 1884 Lens and both the D-Type (daguerreotype) Plate film, C-Type (cyanotype) Plate and Rock BW-11 films, then did some post processing in Snapseed app to add sharpness and contrast. I put a side light on her face, it was casual and quick so I did not perfected the direction of light. Due to the darkness I only could get the last one sharp trying to hold my hand sturdy and hold my breath! (if you noticed the eyes).

Balboa Island – culture captured with iPhone

I went today to Balboa Island for photo walk with main focus on street photography and capturing the culture there, people, shops, main landmarks. Carrying my camera with 35mm lens attached, I took some nice pictures which I will post in separate post. I did not feel comfortable photo shooting candid pictures for people so I used my iPhone instead, it feels more comfortable and does not bring so much attention.

Using Instagram App with iPhone only, I set the view in most of photos to black and white and others to retro mood.I used the tilt and shift real time on the pictures, it was fun and I liked the pictures as it reflects the nature of the place. I spent most of the time in Marine Avenue street and South Bay Front street.

below is the complete set (click to open the slideshow)

My first try on Instagram iPhone App

I downloaded the Instagram iPhone App on my iPhone after I read a review that they added the tilt and shift effect. I loved this App, the effects reflect retro style photography but what I liked the most is two things: the first thing is the tilt and shift effect which is a nice simulation of the tilt and shift lens. The second thing that I loved is the live view of the App while the effects are on!. for example I turned on black and white and also the tilt and shift effect and I can view through the iPhone in black and white plus with the tilt and shift active and I can change the focus live before taking the snapshot. I think I will use my iPhone more frequently from now on for casual photography using the Instagram iPhone App. Big well done for Instagram software team!. Below are the first pics I took without planning or thinking just right out of the iPhone.
